Biography & Background

Roxanne Hawn spent nearly 10 years as a staff writer and editor. She then began her freelance career in late 1999 on the advice of several mentors, who for years encouraged her to make the leap. Roxanne feels nothing less than liberated. Because she’s on the outside and not bogged down by other things, she can focus only on the goal, the deadline, and the creative vision for the piece – be it for a newspaper, magazine or private client. See samples. Editors and sources alike appreciate Roxanne’s ability to establish rapport and write compelling, accurate copy. See praise.

An avowed lifestyles generalist, Roxanne credits her liberal arts education from The Colorado College and broad professional experience, with giving her the ability to pick up nearly any topic quickly – health and fitness, home and fashion, artists and authors, relationships and marriage, trends and tips. Seriously, she may go from a trade magazine piece on the intricacies of starting a veterinary hospital in a strip mall one day to a story for a shelter magazine on high-end bedding the next. In 2004, she even helped write a lengthy history project about Titan missiles. With the help of engineers, she literally wrote about rocket science.

Amid this wide range of topics, Roxanne is perhaps best known for her writing about weddings and related trends. From 2001 to 2006, Roxanne served as the “Vows” columnist for The Denver Post. She literally attended some two dozen weddings each year. She is also an occasional contributor to the “Vows” and “Field Notes” sections of SundayStyles in The New York Times.

Roxanne is a frequent and regular contributor to several national pet and pet-related trade magazines. As the former lead creative services writer for the American Animal Hospital Association and publications manager for the American Humane Association, she brings more than 10 years of experience writing about these markets.

Roxanne lives in the Rocky Mountains, west of Denver, with her husband Tom. They are the proud companions to two great dogs, Ginko Cornelius (lab/greyhound) and Lilly Elizabeth (border collie). Roxanne reads a lot, loves to cook, manages to make a quilt on occasion, and trains Lilly in canine agility, rally obedience and crowd-pleasing tricks.
